Tooth decay is a serious dental problem. Left undiagnosed and untreated, it can reach the dental pulp of the tooth causing its inflammation and infection. The goal of root canal treatment is to save your tooth so that an extraction is not necessary.
After numbing your tooth with an anesthetic to ensure your comfort during your procedure, your dentist will remove the decay and debris from the tooth and fill the space with a special filling material that will guard against further damage..
Normally, after the root canal we build up the tooth and then place a dental crown. The dental crown provides additional strength and support to the tooth to prevent potential problems like tooth fracture.
Oftentimes it is best to start taking medicine for pain reduction within an hour of having had the procedure. This helps to ensure that pain relief is on its way before the anesthesia starts subsiding. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually quite effective. Avoid products containing aspirin, as they have a tendency to increase bleeding.
Avoid vigorous physical activity for 24 hours after your root canal procedure. Do not bite down on hard or crunchy food that might lead to the tooth without a crown to fracture. Delaying your final tooth restoration could also result in a tooth fracture.
