General dentistry can help you with a wide variety of treatments and procedures that can put that sparkle back into your smile or correct minor defects. Here are a few of the more popular general dentistry procedures that are available today.
Have you been putting off having your teeth cleaned? As routine and boring as it may seem, a good dental cleaning is one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay that can lead to complex and expensive procedures down the road.
Tooth decay occurs due to the presence of bacteria in the mouth that secrete acidic substances, breaking down the enamel protecting your teeth. Eventually, this leads to a hole, or cavity, in your tooth. At this point, there is nothing stopping the infection from reaching the nerve of the tooth and destroying it. Your dentist is committed to ensuring that you retain your natural teeth as long as possible.
A dental cleaning is where we use special instruments to remove any plaque or tartar found on your teeth. Plaque is a film that coats your teeth due to the presence of bacteria. If it is not removed, it hardens into plaque that can only be removed by the dentist.
Fillings are one of the first things that people think of when they think of dental treatments. This is a very common treatment that helps prevent tooth decay from progressing and causing the loss of a tooth.
After administering a local anesthetic with an injection, we will drill into the tooth to remove all tooth decay and debris found there. Next, we fill up the cavity with a filling material to protect your tooth.
You normally have some choices when it comes to the materials used in your dental filling. Most patients prefer options that blend in with the natural color of their teeth, particularly when those teeth are located near the front of their mouth where they will be displayed prominently.
When an opportunity is missed to place a dental filling, a root canal procedure may be necessary. It becomes needed when a tooth infection reaches the dental pulp, which is the soft tissue found within every tooth. If the dental pulp becomes severely infected, it could result in the loss of a tooth. The root canal is a last-ditch measure that allows us to save the tooth. Although the dental pulp will not be present, the ligament connecting the tooth to the bone will allow for some blood and nourishment to reach the tooth.
After administering a local anesthetic via injection, we will remove the diseased dental pulp and fill the empty space with a special packing material to protect the tooth from further damage. Finally, we will normally place a dental crown on this tooth to further strengthen and protect it.
Of course, no one looks forward to needing a root canal procedure. However, it does allow you to save your tooth. And most patients find the experience no more uncomfortable than that of receiving a dental filling.
Have your teeth become discolored because of drinking tea, coffee or red wine? Or are they stained because you are a smoker? If so, no worries. We can professionally whiten your teeth here at the office in only one visit.
Of course, you can always use those teeth whitening kits that are available at pharmacies and online. Unfortunately, people are often disappointed at the paltry results. Only a professional teeth whitening can provide dramatic results for teeth so white that you can signal ships with them!
One reason for our superior results is that we use a higher concentration hydrogen peroxide gel. We can also reach into tooth crevices often neglected by at-home treatments.
Dental porcelain veneers are widely popular due to their cosmetic appearance and little amount of tooth structure to be removed in comparison with a dental crown. Please look for our section on Cosmetic Dentistry to read more.
