Dental veneers are a popular cosmetic dental treatment choice for anyone who requires a correction for a minor tooth defect like gaps or a chipped tooth or discolored tooth. When considering any type of dental procedure, you'll probably have a number of questions that require answers before making any kind of decision.
Let's answer some of the more popular questions regarding dental veneers so that you can make an informed choice about your dental care.
Dental veneers are thin sheets composed of composite resin or porcelain. We apply them to the front part of your tooth to correct aesthetic issues like discoloration, size or shape. We may recommend dental veneers for a variety of cosmetic concerns, including misalignment, chips, gaps and discoloration.
A porcelain veneer is a custom-made shell or skin fitting over the front tooth surface. This type of veneer is formed in a dental lab by a professional dental technician. Although porcelain veneers are the preferred type, the fact that they are formed in a lab means that they are not as easy to repair or replace as other types.
A skilled dental technician can make a porcelain veneer in their laboratory that is both extremely durable and life-like aesthetically pleasing, following a precise instruction from your dentist as to the shape and shade of the final restoration. Porcelain veneers are famous for having that translucent, glass-like finish that closely resembles the appearance of natural teeth.
The type of resin used in dental veneers is similar to that used to restore cavities, and is sometimes known as composite bonding. Like porcelain, composite veneers can also be developed in a lab, but most of them are created by the dentist during a live procedure as you sit in a dental chair.
The composite form of dental veneer is sculpted right onto your tooth. So this treatment is faster than receiving a porcelain veneer. Since a lab is not normally involved, it is also less expensive than porcelain. You can normally receive a composite resin dental veneer in only one dental appointment. Please keep in mind that composite dental veneers are much less durable and resistant to stain in comparison with porcelain veneers. The gold standard of dental veneers is porcelain veneer due to tooth-like appearance and durability.
Although composite veneers can normally be completed in only one visit, this does not take into account any needed restorative work that must be performed in preparing for the veneers. Additional visits may also be required in some cases.
Proper planning is essential, including any models, photographs and digital x-rays that are taken prior to the appointment starting to ensure the proper color and shape of your future veneers. Receiving your dental veneers begins with tooth preparation. We will remove a small amount of enamel from any teeth receiving a veneer. A local anesthetic may or may not be required.
In the case of a porcelain veneer, an impression will be taken of the tooth. This is used by the dental technician to create your porcelain veneer in a dental laboratory. A few weeks may be required before it is ready for placement. In the meantime, we will fit you with temporary veneers.
Next, we will remove any surface defect or discoloration from your tooth. If you are receiving a porcelain veneer, we will cement it into place.
In the case of composite veneers, we will prepare your tooth and apply your dental veneer in one dental visit. Your dentist will apply this type of veneer in layers and carefully sculpt it, followed by polishing.
